Founder and Chief Executive of Wetherell

How many years have you been an agent?

Since the early 70’s and set up my own business in 1982 (celebrating 35 years as the specialist agent for Mayfair in 2017)

In one sentence why do you think independent agents are a better choice for the public?

Knowledge of their area, expertise, enthusiasm, empathy – in most cases their name is above the door and their reputation is paramount.

What do you hope CIELA will achieve?

To bring a collective voice for independents that represent 80% of the estate agency sector of the property market – which unbelievably is still not regulated.

Minimum standards, raising the barrier to entry and promoting the benefits of appointing a local and knowledgeable estate agent committed to their area and profession.

To what do you attribute your success over your competitors?

Focus – being the specialist agent for the Mayfair area.

Ambassador – Heralding the area as the place to live. Wetherell is Mayfair’s No.1 estate agent, promoting London’s No.1 area.

Aficionado – Nobody knows Mayfair better than Wetherell – knowledge and data on the area.

Advocate – Placing the area before ourselves, fighting for issues in the community and working for the good of the whole area. Bringing residential life back to Mayfair

What is the hardest part of running an independent agency?

Process – however it is also the most important.

Most agents would admit to being busier than they like. What one thing would you advise them to stop doing?

Work smarter not harder however you can never be too busy – you just need to be efficient, passionate and focused.

Who is the most impressive agent you have ever met?

Peter Knight – a former estate agent who now runs The Property Academy (giving peer group training and advancement to the profession) and also The Estate Agents Awards with The Times & Sunday Times (celebrating and awarding best in class in our profession)

How would you describe the overall quality of the founders group?

Diverse backgrounds, wide geographical coverage, all best in class with a collective focus on raising standards and image of our profession through best practice and competitive advantage through their knowledge and independence.

Why do you think Charlie is the right person to get this organisation started?

Charlie Wright is a rare individual who although never an estate agent realises the challenges and requirements of the estate agency world for an ever increasing process led industry where he is an enabler through software that unchains the agents from bureaucracy to do what they do best – selling – having time to act for their clients in their best interests and giving best service.

As well as being visionary, he is a leader – unlike most of the industry characters who are reactive and make a lot of noise but achieve little – Charles is proactive and provides either solutions or initiatives.

What aspect of your business are you most proud of?

Longevity and the referrals from my clients both old and new.

If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about your business, what would it be?

If you are referring to my business – then as the owner I hold the magic wand and have the privilege of enacting my strategy more effectively than process laden corporates.

If you are talking about “The Business” then it is very simple – The Licensing of Estate Agents – to eventually become Chartered Estate Agents.

In one word how would you describe the responsibility of being an employer?
